Tati McQuay, an actress, singer, and dancer living in LA doesn’t have the usual 15-year-old’s schedule. Here, she tells us where she gets her inspiration and how she keeps her skin so clear.
Welcome to dote dish, the crown’s Q&A series where we interview your favorite creators to ask them the questions you want to know the answers to. We’re super excited to share our conversation with Tati McQuay, an actress, singer, dancer, and all around amazing performer living in Los Angeles.
Dote: What’s your all time favorite song?
Tati: It’s usually any Justin Bieber song, but at the moment it’s Younger.
Dote: What’s the last TV show you binge-watched?
Tati: I just finished The Society on Netflix. I loved it and am ready for season two! I thought the actors and actresses did an amazing job and I watched it while filming a movie, so it really inspired me.
Dote: What or who inspires you the most as a creator and why?
Tati: Definitely JLo because she does everything that I want to do: dance, sing, act, and perform. She takes on so much as an artist while still being a mom with a family. She never listens to the hate and just keeps doing what she’s doing. I’m also a big fan of Wonder Woman, so I think Gal Gadot is amazing.
Dote: Who is your biggest girlboss crush?
Tati: Billie Eilish! I’ve been listening to her since day one (shoutout, Ocean Eyes!). There is not a song of hers that I don’t love—I dance to all of her music. I also think her style is everything and honestly want to be her sometimes. She wears baggy clothes because she doesn’t want people to base anything on her looks. She’s all about being herself and weird, whether people like it or not! I find her absolutely stunning.
Dote: Who’s the last person who sent you a text?
Tati: My best friend, Lily Chee.
Dote: What’s your favorite skincare product and why?
Tati: It’s changed recently, but currently it’s definitely LANCÔME’s Tonique Confort Rehydrating Comforting Toner. I’ve kept my skincare routine very simple lately—just got that Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser going on, then the toner, followed by the CeraVe moisturizer. Making my routine simpler has been a miracle worker. I didn’t used to wear toner, or really get the point of it, but it’s made a huge difference in keeping my skin clear.
Dote: What’s a cause you care about and why?
Tati: Visiting children in other countries who don’t have the privileges we have here in the states is important to me. I went on a trip to Kenya with Call It Spring to build schools for children that changed my life. These kids literally do not have schools; to hear about it is one thing but to experience first-hand how these young people are living was honestly mind-blowing for me. It was amazing to see how happy it made the kids to do something that actually made a small difference.
I love to travel and the trip was a good reminder that there is so much more to this world than what’s happening in our specific state, city, or even country. It’s important to know about the problems in your area, but at the same time the world is so much bigger than people realize. In Kenya, I was also able to teach dance classes for the young kids, which I loved. I have a lot of supporters here in the states who have phones and TVs, but these kids didn’t care about who I am—they don’t even have access to YouTube. Seeing how happy it made them just to take part in a dance class at all was very inspiring. I’m actually headed to Belize this weekend to visit orphanages there and I can’t wait.
Dote: What’s your favorite book and why?
Tati: The Fault in Our Stars. I read the book and then watched the movie and thought the storyline was very touching.
Dote: What’s your favorite family tradition?
Tati: I am originally from Canada, where half of my family still lives, while the rest of us are located in LA. My favorite time of year is whenever I get to spend time with the entire family, which is usually Christmas and over the summer. I honestly don’t care what we do, I just like having everyone with me and doing fun things with the people I love the most. And spending Christmas in Canada is very special because I actually get to enjoy a white Christmas, which of course doesn’t happen here in LA!
Dote: If you could spend a day with three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Tati: I would choose my three favorite singer/songwriters, Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, and Kehlani. I’ve been listening to their music since the beginning. For me, the lyrics to songs are very important, which may be a dancer thing. I’m not a dancer that goes by counts, I go by words. When you pay attention to an artist’s lyrics, it feels like you genuinely know them because it feels more emotional, in some cases even feeling their pain. I think they’re musically amazing and the lyrics and the words and how much thought and feeling they put into their songs blows my mind. That’s why I’d want to spend a day with them. And, they all seem like they’re so fun to be around, not to mention their style kills me.
Dote: What’s your favorite clothing brand?
Dote: What’s your go to coffee order?
Tati: I do drink coffee, but right now I am always getting a Chai Tea Latte, and it doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold.
Dote: What’s something your followers may not know about you?
Tati: I am a black belt! I got it a year or two ago.
Dote: What is your favorite quote?
Tati: I love quotes, so it’s hard to choose just one. My favorite at the moment is: Either you play the game or you let the game play you.
